Heavin Maier took winding path to becoming an optometrist. Initially drawn to the profession after receiving her first pair of glasses, her undergraduate studies were undecided and included time spent working on an organic farm and in a biogeochemistry lab. Despite a calling towards optometry during this time, she ultimately felt drawn to a career that allowed for more human connection.
Returning to school years later, the Heavin finally pursued optometry. This episode details the challenges faced along the way, including academic struggles, financial difficulties, and even employee embezzlement. However, Heavin also highlights the joys of the profession, including the ability to help patients and the camaraderie found among colleagues. Michelle Glaze is the director of professional outreach for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. She joined the Foundation in February 2019 after 15 years in medical sales. Her passion for the Foundation’s mission is very personal due to her vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa, a progressive retinal disease. As director of professional outreach at the Foundation, Michelle educates eye care professionals across the United States about resources available to patients with a retinal degenerative disease.
