Dr. Lowe is currently Director/President of Professional Eye Care Center, Incorporated, a private practice she founded in 1992 on Chicago’s Northwest Side. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola University of Chicago in 1984 and graduated with honors from the Illinois College of Optometry in
1988. The college named her the Alumnus of the Year in 2002. Dr. Lowe is active in organized optometry and is a Past President of the Illinois Optometric Association. Dr. Lowe was awarded Illinois’s Young Optometrist of the Year in 1995 and Optometrist of the Year in 2006. She has been a career long member of the American Optometric Association serving as a Past Chair of the AOA Contact Lens and Cornea Section and currently serves as Chair of the Strategic Communications Committee and is a Keyperson for AOA Advocacy. She is a Fellow with the American Academy of Optometry and a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry. She serves as VisionSource Medical Director in Chicagoland where she is an administrator for over sixty independent private practice locations. Dr. Lowe has lectured and authored on many topics including retinal disease, cataract extraction, laser vision correction, and currently travels throughout the country speaking on new contact lens innovations, technologies for early detection of macular degeneration, dry eye disease strategies and myopia management.
Dr. Melissa Barnett is a principal optometrist at the University of California, Davis Eye Center in Sacramento and Davis, California. She is an internationally recognized key opinion leader, specializing in dry eye disease, specialty contact lenses, and presbyopia. Dr. Barnett lectures globally and publishes extensively on topics including dry eye, anterior segment disease, contact lenses, presbyopia, and creating a healthy balance between work and home life for women in optometry. She is Immediate Past Chair of the American Optometric Association Contact Lens and Cornea Section, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, a Diplomate of the American Board of Certification in
Medical Optometry, a Fellow and Global Ambassador of the British Contact Lens
Association, serves on the Board of the Gas Permeable Lens Institute, International Society of Contact Lens Specialists and is Past President of The Scleral Lens Education Society. Drs. Melissa Barnett and Lynette Johns authored and edited the book Contemporary Scleral Lenses: Theory and Application with the unique perspectives and contributions of international experts. Dr. Barnett most recently chaired the BCLA CLEAR report on scleral lenses. She is currently serving on the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS): A Lifestyle Epidemic Ocular Surface Disease Workshop. Dr. Barnett was awarded the inaugural Theia Award for Excellence for Mentoring by Women in Optometry. She was
granted the Most Influential Women in Optical from Vision Monday in 2019. Dr. Barnett and Dr. Tom Arnold are co-hosts of the popular podcast GlobalEyes. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, yoga, hiking and spending time with family.

Today on the show it is an honor to have the President of the American Optometric Association on, Dr. Bob Layman. We talk about advocating for the role of optometrists, how the AOA is helping advocate for the profession, and how we can each individually break down barriers in the profession as optometrists.
About Our Guest:
Robert C. Layman, O.D., was elected to the American Optometric Association Board of Trustees at the 116th Annual AOA Congress & 43rd Annual AOSA Conference: Optometry's Meeting® in June 2013 and serves as President of the Board of Trustees.
In addition to his position as President, Dr. Layman serves as chair of the Executive Committee and the Personnel Committee and is the Speaker of the House of Delegates. Additionally, Dr. Layman is a member of the Center for Independent Practice Committee. He is the liaison trustee to the Council on Research Committee and the National Board of Examiners in Optometry group. He also serves as the liaison trustee of affiliate associations in Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Montana, New Mexico, and Utah.
Prior to his election to the AOA Board of Trustees, Dr. Layman's 30-plus years of consecutive AOA volunteer service include the following chairmanships: Diabetes Project Team, Optometric Executive's Project Team, Information and Member Services Group Executive Committee Chair, Non-Dues Income Committee, Assistance to Graduates Project Team and 401(K) Committee Chair.
Dr. Layman was honored with the AOA Optometrist of the Year award in 2006. He has also received the Ohio Optometrist of the Year, Ohio Young Optometrist of the Year, Ohio Key Optometrist of the Year and Outstanding Senior Student Awards. Dr. Layman is a past president of the Ohio Optometric Association (OOA). He served as the OOA Electronic Health Records Task Force liaison to the Northwest Ohio Regional Extension Center/Health Information Partnership from 2010-2014. Dr. Layman chaired the EastWest Eye Conference from 2009-2011. He has presented the RealEyes Classroom Initiative curriculum in his community since the program's inception in 2001.
Dr. Layman is a graduate of The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Optometry, where he was named one of OSU College of Optometry’s Top 100 Notable Alumni during the 100th anniversary of the college. He has served as a vision consultant to the University of Toledo Athletic Department for more than 25 years. He has been an adult leader in Boy Scout Troop 87, a volunteer with the Mildred Bayer Homeless Clinic of Toledo, and a member of the YMCA Board of Managers.
Dr. Layman is an owner of Pinnacle Eye Group in Lambertville, Michigan and Great Lakes Vision Care in Monroe, Michigan, and lives with his wife, Barb, in Toledo, Ohio. They have four grown children. He is energized to continue advancing the profession by working closely with affiliates, increasing membership, and securing the proper place for optometry in health care reform.

He was one of the few panelists in the U.S. selected to partake in the inaugural Ophthalmology Innovation Summit (OIS) – Myopia Showcase in 2021. He was also privileged to be part of the inaugural American Optometric Association (AOA) Leadership Institute Class in 2020.
Throughout his career, Dr. Chan has been a frequent speaker and contributor in various optometric events and platforms, including the Global Specialty Lens Symposium (GSLS), Vision By Design (VBD), Review of Optometry, Review of Myopia Management and Contact Lens Spectrum, to name a few.
Dr. Chan was awarded “Best Eye Doctor (category – optometrist)” by Washington Parents Magazine in 2020. He has been an active member of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), American Optometric Association (AOA), Maryland Optometric Association (MOA), and American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control (AAOMC).
